Day 12 saw the conclusion of Groups A and B. It was also the day when the 19th penalty of Russia 2018 was awarded – a new World Cup record.
The hosts were easily beaten in their final Group match. Uruguay progressed into the knockout phase with a 100% record and three clean sheets. Only Steve Keay saw such and easy win coming for the South Americans, collecting three points while a handful of others collected a single point.
Both of these teams found themselves playing for pride having both already lost their opening two Group matches. This was the first World Cup win for the Saudis in their 12th match – not something any SPAGames players saw coming, with nil match points scored.
23 players correctly chose Uruguay to win the Group, scoring 10 points, while the 11 with Russia get 5 points for Group Runner-up. Peter Bunker was the only person to stray, selecting Egypt and now sitting bottom of the overall table!
Loads of late action in both matches saw points being won and lost all over the place.
Top of the table Jason Brown was the only person to score any points at all from this match, bagging all three with the help of Cristiano Ronaldo’s missed penalty in the second half – the award of which set a new World Cup record for the number of penalties given.
The Africans were ahead twice in this match, battling hard for pride despite already being eliminated after two defeats in the Group. Nobody in SPAGames saw this coming at all – in fact, between the last two Group B matches just three points were scored!
Just nine people had chosen Portugal as their Group Winner – they will have been disappointed with the injury time shenanigans in both matches which saw a ten point swing to the 26 who had chosen Spain before the start of the tournament!
In the Round of 16, Uruguay will meet Portugal in Sochi on 30 June, with Spain set to play hosts Russia in Moscow a day later.
